Skype Bug Gives Your Location Away! Serious Threat To Users?

by Paul Joseph December 5, 2011 Featured

Skype has been one of the most used Internet service when getting in touch with loved ones and friends is concerned. They pioneered the use of Video Chat and VOIP services (Skype2Phone) among the general public. They are currently one of the most used and trusted Internet communications company in the world. There are many other incremental changes that have been added to service. Since its, acquisition by Microsoft in 2010 for US $8.5 billion , Skype is all set to be integrated into the next iteration of the Windows Operating System ( Windows 8 ). So, it was surprising when we got the news that Skype can actually pose a threat to its users by giving away their location to prying eyes. According to research conducted by scientists at the  Polytechnic Institute of New York University a Skype user’s Internet Protocol, or IP, address can still be vulnerable to theft even if the person does not accept an incoming call on the service. A simple IP address is enough for people to track you to a country right down to the street you are standing on. Besides your location, other risk factors are adept hackers can easily access your download history and your activities online. According to the Scientists at the Polytechnical Institute, any smart high school and college kid can do this easily. The Scientists were able to track a user through three different countries. Skype is not only used for personal communication but also for professional communication. This bug makes eavesdropping on such secret communication and the respective location easy. This may be a small bug but it has potential to wreak havoc in many aspects like Politics, business and even terrorism prevention. Skype has 171 million people who use the service . That is quite a number! Imagine the threat that so many people could face if this bug is exploited by nefarious elements in society! This bug was apparently brought to Skype’s notice a year ago and still nothing has been done about it. Adrian Asher, Chief Information security officer for Skype said that, “ We value the privacy of our users and are committed to making our products as secure as possible. Just as with typical Internet communications software, Skype users who are connected may be able to determine each other’s IP address. Through research and development, we will continue to make advances in this area and improvements to our software .” If not squashed soon, the bug will make people insecure about using Skype and may result in many users migrating to other secure services. Professor Ross from the Polytechnic Institute suggests that you should never keep your real name as your Skype user name. Seems like a sound piece of advice. Do you use Skype? Would you dump the service if this bug persists? Do let us know.

Yahoo Dragged To Court For Not Providing Govt Requested E-mail Details

by Paul Joseph September 15, 2011 Featured

In a landmark judgment which might set a precedent for cyber security , The Delhi High Court has stayed an order by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) , which asked Yahoo India to pay Rs 11 lakh as penalty . According to the CCA, the penalty is for the failure to provide personal email details to protect “national interests” . The government sought these confidential details from CCA about some individuals, who in turn asked Yahoo India to furnish the same. Yahoo India however did not provide the information and was fined under Section 28 of the Information Technology (IT) Act. No Wrongdoing on our part, says Yahoo On behalf of Yahoo India, former solicitor general Gopal Subramanium was adamant that the firm had complied with the provision of Section 69 of the IT Act and had provided the information. “ CCA is not authorized to impose a fine or penalty ,” said Yahoo India. This was further opposed by the CCA saying that it had asked for collection of information, but Section 69 only deals with monitoring. The next hearing will be on November 8. The Cyber-security debate rears its head again We have been tracking the security measures (or lack of) in India closely, and this latest case does not do the E-mail service providers any favours. We think the general consensus among them should be to provide any details, especially those which are deemed “ of national interest ” as soon as possible. India faces numerous hostile enemies on all sides, and service providers had better stick to official protocol. Avoiding Needless Litigations Again, both parties could have dealt with this in a more discreet and professional manner. A global E-mail giant opposing local laws is not something new, but it does taint E-commerce prospects in the country. The best thing which can be done in these cases is for the DoT to setup some sort of “hotline” with every company to keep the lines of communication clear. Obviously, inter-departmental co-operation within the Government is paramount for this, but it is something that can be worked on. The ideal situation for India should be to not scare off potential new investors into our booming E-Commerce story , and at the same time impose controls and regulations to ensure we do not fall victim to terror or cyber attacks. We will stay on top of the verdict to see how exactly the Courts react, and whether this was just a non-story in the first place.   Are you worried about the levels of control the Government can impose on the Internet? Let us know.

Facebook To Do Away With Spam Photo Tags; Adds Un-tagging Tools

by Paul Joseph September 14, 2011 Featured

Stiff competition by Google+ has forced Facebook  to revamp a lot of its interface in the past few months, and now we have another development: Picture Tag Screening . Spammy photo tags have been a major irritant for some months now, with people mass tagging their list in everything from cat pictures to animated cartoons. In an attempt to keep this in control and curbing unwanted photos, this new feature has been introduced. Earlier, anyone was free to tag a user in any photo and they had to manually go to the picture and untag themselves so that it wouldn’t appear on their profile. Now with the new untagging tool, users have additional options. Namely, they can block users, report abuse and also untag themselves, directly from the untag option. This applies not only to photos, but also to posts, notes and videos. A Facebook spokesperson in a statement to the Daily Mail, said,“One of the top requests we’ve heard is for the ability to approve these tags before they show up on your profile, This new way of protecting your privacy is balanced against the more liberal features, which allow users to tag anyone in their posts, whether they are friends with that person or not” While we welcome the move, we feel Facebook needs to improve it further. Earlier, one could untag one’s self from a photo in one simple click. With the extended options, it now takes three clicks just to untag a picture. This can be a cause of inconvenience for people mass untagging. However, it accomplishes its aim as now it is a lot easier to block and report spam taggers. What do you think of the new untagging tool? Were we better off without or is it welcome? Do let us know.

Youtube Launches Partner Programme

by Paul Joseph September 14, 2011 Featured

It’s been a year since Google began partnering selectively with media companies to provide tools and the back-end necessary for broadcasting their videos and creating unique views on Youtube. Google launched the YouTube Partner Programme (YPP) formally in India yesterday. It is now available for everyone. YouTube draws around 20 million people to it in India. The Partnership programme for the video sharing site is definitely a win-win. Partners get to use the robust back-end powered by Google’s technology, its strong advertising network and earn revenue through their content by using contextual video advertising in their videos. This programme was launched in 2007 in select countries and is currently operating across 22 countries with users making around $100,000 annually in some cases. According to some stats provided by Google, the unique user count is supposed to touch 25-30 million. This is a staggering figure when you think of all the possibilities that can arise. Earlier, if you shot home videos and short films, it was very difficult for you to take your content to many people without marketing support. YouTube has changed all that . You can just upload your video and use Google’s advertising network to take your video to the people. This paradigm shift would have been unthinkable before YouTube. The Digital marketplace is only getting bigger. With the majority of India’s population still not using the internet, there lies great potential in marketing your content online. David Macdonald, head of YouTube Content Operations (Asia Pacific), said that YouTube also plans to start an incubation programme which will help find partners. “ We are still working on this. In this incubation programme, we can help them (YPPs) create content and give them tools. Other than large media houses driving consumption, in recent times, we have seen an increasing demand for user-generated content or individual content ,”. According to recent data of IAMAI, Indian online advertising revenue generated is Rs 1,000 crore in 2010, and will increase Rs 1,500 crore by the end of 2011. A large part of this revenue comes from  display advertising, embedded ads, banner ads and in-video stream ads on websites and video sites. As compare to last year there is an impressive growth of 81 per cent in the Youtube’s Top 100 video show ads. By: Denzil L

Windows 8 Further Unveiled

by Paul Joseph September 14, 2011 Featured

Love it or hate it, the dominant PC Operating System has always been and may always be Windows. Windows 7 was definitely a bigger success than Vista, and finally made people leave XP, we now have Windows 8 to look forward to. We last reported Microsoft previewing  Windows 8, at that time thought to be its tablet OS , back in June. Last night at a Developer’s BUILD Conference, Microsoft released their latest test build of Windows 8, the code name for Microsoft’s next OS. Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, in his keynote address to the thousands of developers, said , “ We reimagined Windows, from the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise .” Here are some of the upgrades and improvements of Windows 8:    Windows 8 will be for desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablet PCs, servers and media centers. It will finally have support for ARM microprocessors in addition to Intel and AMD. There will be an extensively redesigned Ribbon User Interface to suit touchscreen input better, in addition to keyboard and mouse. This Ribbon UI will be based on their Windows Phone 7 User Interface. Live Application Tiles with constantly updating information and a new Home Screen, Start Menu. New lockscreen showing notifications, date and time with customizable backgrounds. Internet Explorer 10 was shown, with fullscreen support and multitouch gestures. Though it is an upgrade, Windows 8 will use less RAM and CPU resources than Windows Vista and 7. We find this impressive as other companies like Apple exclude older devices in updates instead of including more. Their is a Reset option to remove all junk files that make your computer slower. It is said to make your PC feel fresh in under 10 minutes without losing data or programs in the process. According to Microsoft VP Christoper Ham, Windows 8 has a whole new developer platform, based on Javascript and HTML5. They also demoed a Snap function to display apps side by side, similar to Win7′s. It will by default be at an Aspect Ratio of 16:9 Resolution, with support for different resolutions. Shorter Boot Time by saving kernel memory to the hard drive on shutdown, similar to what Hibernate does on today’s computers. Here is what will make many happy: the Hardware Requirements. The 32 Bit version needs a 1Ghz Processor, 1GB RAM and 16GB of HDD space. 64 Bit will require 2GB RAM and 20 GB HDD Space. This means almost all current computers will be supported. Here are some screenshots of Windows 8 running on a Tablet PC. Here is a Video  Preview  of Windows 8 running on a Samsung device by ThisIsMyNext. You can read Microsoft’s official release on Windows 8 here . You can also try the Windows Developer Preview of Windows 8 for yourself from here . What do you think of Windows 8 so far? In the post-PC Era, will it dominate over Apple’s iOS? Do let us know.

Mobile App Market Is Projected To Generate $35 Billion, Globally By 2014

by Paul Joseph September 13, 2011 Featured

Spending more and more time online, the consumers need to stay connected all the time. The government has already taken notice of this and the first National Policy on IT is being drafted at present. India has over 65 million active internet users and nearly 900 million mobile handsets, so the mobile app market is entering its best phase in the country. Recent reports project that the mobile applications market will grow to an astounding $35 billion by the year 2014. Angel investors and venture capital firms seem to have taken notice of this and are investing various existing companies and startup’s like never before in India. SMS GupShup , one of first Indian company to enter the mobile social networking domain, had their fifth round of funding in end-August. Some of the other players in the mobile application development field who have had an influx of funding recently include Sourcebits and Onward Mobility. The fact that 3G network adoption is on the rise and that a large number of internet users preferred device to stay connected is most likely going to be a mobile device, has spurred investor interest. Ovum, an analyst firm, predicted that the number of mobile application downloads will be around 5 billion in the Asia-Pacific region by the end of 2011. That will be three times the number of mobile app downloads at the end of 2010, which stood at 1.6 billion. India is now a major player in this region and a significant number of downloads will originate from here. This further highlights the fact that ‘now’ is the best time for startup’s to enter the market. But just a great idea will not suffice. A startup has to have a long-term plan and their product/idea should be scalable. They also need to decide which platform they will concentrate on. Apple iOS has been the dominant platform till now for both smartphones and tablets, but most reports indicate that Android is all set to become the numero uno. Add to this mix the new Windows Phone 7 (also known as Mango), which promises to be an interesting platform. The Indian mobile app development companies, like Spice Labs, are already making headlines in the app download category. Spice Labs, which has 21 applications (both free and paid) in Blackberry App World has registered more than 1 0 million downloads till date . Indian smartphone users love their apps and use the same at home, while traveling and also at work. A study conducted jointly by Professor Trevor Pinch of Cornell University and Nokia reveals that Indian consumers put higher importance to the quality of an app than on the quantity of apps in their smartphones. Another survey conducted by Inmobi and comScore points out that Indian mobile users do not mind receiving advertisements on their phones. The Indian mobile app market has the potential to grow like no other. Startup’s and existing players need to concentrate on developing apps which can enable commerce through mobile and which can provide the user content customized according to their usage history. The rural market in India is vast and as mobile handset penetration increases, local content apps will become extremely important. What kind of apps do you use? Do you think apps improve your smartphone experience? Lets us know. By: Riddhi M

Samsung Catching Up With Nokia

by Paul Joseph September 13, 2011 Featured

Korean consumer electronics major, Samsung has clearly had a very good year. According to the Voice & Data study that was done recently, Samsung is narrowing the gap that existed between itself and Finnish phone major, Nokia. Samsung India has posted a growth of 21.7 percent to register revenues of Rs. 5720 crore in 2010-11 as compared to the Rs. 4700 crore that they bought in during the last fiscal. In 2010, Samsung claimed a market share of 20.1 % . This has now risen to 28 % . Nokia’s market share has receded from 49.3% in 2010 to 39 % at present. Samsung has also increased its figures on terms of monthly shipments relative to Nokia. According to an industry insider, “ In 2007-08, Samsung sold 0.2 million units approximately in a month, while Nokia sold 4 million lakh units. Currently,  Samsung is selling is selling close to 3 million units per month but Nokia has just about increased its sales to 4.6 million “. It is understandable why Nokia has been under immense pressure these days, by concentrating on these numbers. If Samsung continues this way, it will topple Nokia as a market leader. Samsung has an advantage in smartphone division with products like Galaxy S II and Wave 2. Samsung has been selling its other smartphones , and it also joined hands with Indiblogger community. Their partnership with Google and Android has yielded them significant results not just in India, but globally. The decent pricing of all these phones has attracted a lot of people. Nokia is dealing with this situation as a challenge . They contend that they are still the market leaders in terms of smartphones, but Symbian is in its death throes. Their partnership with Microsoft will see them slowly bring Windows Phone as their primary OS. They are still using Symbian till that transition period and are trying to leverage value from it. If you have noticed Nokia’s marketing campaign recently, you will see that they have become rather aggressive and have started releasing varied models of their phones that will target many segments. Recently, they launched the Vodafone Blue which has one-click Facebook accessibility and is priced attractively. They are also investing hugely on the Dual-SIM segment with products like X1-01, C2-00 with many more in the works. By: Denzil Lewis
