Google+ , Google’s struggling social project has got a new app for the iPhone ecosystem. The app has been completely designed in-house & contains features that seem conjured up only for the mobile platform. What’s new? The earlier version was merely an app for the comparatively smaller screen. However, Google’s team has managed to “ re-imagine what the service should look like on a mobile device ”. In other words, the app is designed with a ‘ mobile first ’ perspective. With images & multimedia content given precedence, endless scrolling with data optimization to quickly put up whatever is in focus, highlights the efforts to re-design the experience. Both the companies i.e. Facebook as well as Google have their own versions for the mobile operating systems. However, Facebook’s app is doing better , Google+ app is still struggling to stand on its feet. Sure, Google would have us believe that their network is growing slowly but steadily , but recent statistics just prove the opposite to be true . In fact, even newer services have surpassed it ! The constant endeavor to garner user base from whichever platform possible will surely surprise many users constantly. What additional features do you seek in Google+? With the widespread propagation of Personal Computers, it was found that not everyone is comfortable with typing all the time. This lead to the hunt for other ways to input text. The mouse was used to navigate around menus, and people even tried digital pens to input text. However, it was not as quick as needed to genuinely replace the keyboard. Then came ‘ Voice Recognition’ . At first it was incredibly limited and slow, but over time, as hardware and software improved, voice recognition has reached a stage where it can be used by the average consumer. Google is very bullish about Voice Inputs and has integrated it deeply on their Android Smartphones. Apple too set the bar in personal voice assistants with their Siri for the new iPhone . This may surprise some, but voice input has made sizable advancements in the Indian Market too, largely due to Nuance Communications. Through a software developed by them called Dragon NaturallySpeaking, voice recognition is being used in High Courts in places like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and the city of Mumbai. The software allows users to dictate documents, work on their email and give voice commands to the computer without having to input anything manually. It is supposed to be up to 3x faster than typing . Nuance also sees great potential for Dragon Medical , that is already being used in places like Apollo Hospital in Bangalore and SevenHills in Mumbai, in the Healthcare Sector. Traditionally, voice recognition software may have failed in India for several reasons. Firstly, they are prohibitively expensive. Secondly, they fail to recognize local Indian Languages. Thirdly, they fail to recognize the Indian Accent of speaking someone speaking English. Dragon NaturallySpeaing supports 14 different Indian languages, like Indian English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Assamese, Bhojpuri and Urdu. While Dragon’s commercial software are my no means cheap (the Legal Version retails for $799 or Rs. 40,000), consumer versions are available for around $99 (Rs. 5,000). Interestingly, Nuance’s software also powers Siri for the iPhone and Swype, a popular keyboard on Android that also has voice commands. Can Voice Typing replace the traditional keyboard?
