Google Fools The World With 8-Bit Google Maps

by Paul Joseph April 2, 2012 Featured

Yesterday was not only the start of India’s new financial year, but also April Fool’s Day. Around the world, people played small pranks on each other. Companies too usually join in the April Fool’s Day fun with fake products or tongue in cheek announcements. Google Inc. is known for loving the first of April and always has a few tricks up their sleeve. Year after year Google has churned out pranks like Google Chrome in 3D . This year was no different. A few hours before April 1st, a video started doing the rounds on YouTube, about a whole new type of Google Maps: for the 15 year old SNES 8 Bit devices. You can check out the video below. Says Google, “ With Google Maps 8-bit, you can do all the things you already do on regular Google Maps. Search for famous landmarks and sites around the world. Take an epic journey with 8-bit Street View. Get detailed directions to avoid dangerous paths, and battle your way through a world of powerful monsters and mystic treasures. In our pursuit of new digital frontiers, we realized that we may have left behind a large number of users who couldn’t access Google Maps on their classic hardware ,” This wasn’t the only joke Google played this year. They also ‘launched’  Self-Driving NASCAR Racing Cars  through Google Racing and   Google Chrome Multitasking . Such pranks make people empathize with the company. The company comes across as a more human and relatable entity. However, companies should also be careful of going overboard as they can easily end up offending their consumers too. It’s a narrow line that Google treads quite well. What was your favorite prank by Google this year? Do let us know in the comments below.   Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency

Walmart Improves Tech To Combat Amazons Popularity; Fear Factor Hitting Hard?

by Paul Joseph April 2, 2012 Featured

Walmart has recently undertaken some major re-work in the tech they use to keep their customers from wandering off to Amazon.com. Couple of years ago Walmart was not concern about Amazon, but it has reasons to do so now. From just under a quarter of customers to now more than half have revealed that they buy from both is a worrying trend. The store had made a name for itself offering heavily discounted merchandise. However, affluent customers who had sought refuge in Walmart are now returning to  Amazon  as finances improve. Traditionally, bargain hunters were the main target of Walmart. But Amazon has now started offering product categories. This has resulted in heavy erosion of Walmart’s customers.  Just last year Amazon posted a whopping 41% growth while Walmart managed only 8%. Now Walmart has resorted to come clever tech  improvements . Last year Walmart spent nearly   US$ 300 Million  & acquired 5 Tech Firms. Indian Code writers & Engineers are now working feverishly & have managed to establish online purchases for  20%  of customers who do not own a credit card or even a bank account. This was achieved using ‘ Pay With Cash ’ programs. Mobile  Apps  &  Payments  are the new wave sweeping the retailing industry. However, Walmart cleverly utilized their stores to enable customers to pay offline & book online! Walmart also has a  ‘ Shopycat ’  feature your  online wish-list  is carefully scrutinized to offer just what you desire. Interestingly, Walmart’s customers resorted to the ‘ Scan & Scram ’ technique to find the lowest prices. In simpler terms would-be customers use their smart phones in stores to scan an item’s bar code and then buy it online from a rival merchant. Hence, Walmart has come up with ‘ Endless Aisle ’ technique wherein customers can easily buy online what isn’t available in the store, using smart-phones. Let’s see how successful these endeavors are. Will we see Walmart   in India soon ?   Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency

Nokia Smartphones Will Have Mumbai & Delhi Traffic Updates By Default

by Paul Joseph April 2, 2012 Featured

Nokia has quite a few smartphones out in the Indian market right now. This includes their flagship Lumia series of Windows phones along with others like  Nokia N8, Nokia 700, Nokia 701, and Nokia E6. Last Friday, they announced that they will be bringing real time traffic data to these Nokia smartphones. This is one new feature which they will be adding to their location-based services. This traffic update is feature is powered by NAVTEQ Traffic Pro and will provide live and relevant traffic information to users at the press of a button. This option can be accessed from ‘Nokia Drive’ on a Symbian device and ‘Nokia Maps’ on a Windows Phone. The service has been provided by Nokia free of cost to its users. The user will only incur data charges as per their data package. The country has faced lack of value added services like these and this feature will help commuters to plan their commute better and at the same time save fuel and help users avoid frustration. Rajat Tandon, Director of Sales, Commerce and Location for Nokia said, “ Location is at the core of our vision for the future. The aim is to empower people via location-aware technology, he added. Going forward, we will continue to introduce more location-aware services that represent the future of mobility for consumer in India .” We blogged earlier about how Google Maps has also introduced an update which provides an estimate of the time you would take to travel from one location to another although the service doesn’t seem to be active in India yet. This Nokia Maps feature makes use of data provided by a leading GPS provider and it may end up tipping the balance of power in Nokia’s side. No one else has anything like this right now and Nokia has made a splendid move by introducing this. Rajat Tandon is right about the importance that the company is putting on location services. The future of mobile computing and the Internet lie in the automation and accurate delivery of real-time data to users. Have you used Nokia’s feature yet? Do let us know of your experiences. Medical Consultancy Now Online; Simpler Healthcare Or A Dangerous Trend?

by Paul Joseph April 2, 2012 Featured

Yet again healthcare online is into news where  Digital revolution have realized the importance of it. Online Medical stores are not new, but specialized & specific medical devices are now readily available. Sites like  Healthkart.com ,  Health-shoppe.com  etc. now offer devices ranging from simple BP monitors to Nebulizers & even mechanized wheel chairs.  But sites like   Infibeam , Ebay have been offering healthcare & beauty products for quite some time, so where’s the   niche ?  Health-care portals have gone the extra mile & now offer gluten-free & allergy-free products. Additionally, just so users don’t  abuse the site , even simple medication is not available without a proper doctor’s prescription. Sites WebHealthCentre.com, PinkWhaleHealthcare.com and MedIndia.net also offer automated diagnostics once the person specifies symptoms. With additional facilities like online consultation, such sites have hit upon a novel  monetization scheme  too. For example,  MedIndia.net  charges  Rs. 600 (US$ 12)  for non-urgent consultations (1-3 Days), and  Rs. 1,100 (US$ 22)  for responses within 24-36 hours. A few more services like storing your  medical records  online for a small annual fee & even  booking tests online  have immensely helped people who do not find time to carry out diagnostics tests to determine their state of health. But still taking matters in own hands may not be a best idea when it comes to our health. Airtel Will Tie Up With Banks To Provide Cash Withdrawal Services Via Airtel Money

by Paul Joseph March 30, 2012 Featured

Airtel’s M-commerce service Airtel Money has already been launched nationally and now Airtel has announced that they will be tying up with banks to provide cash withdrawal services without having to go to the ATM or the bank branch. They are currently in talks with these banks to finalize the offering . The names of these banks were not publicly released. This service will let Bharti’s retail and Airtel stores to act like banking correspondents where a user will be able to send money to another user. After the transaction complete, the receiving user can go the nearest Bharti authorized shop to withdraw the cash. This is looking like a small scale banking network already. It has the potential to grow into a big business since it makes its easy to transact money via your mobile phone.  With Airtel Money, consumers get a gamut of services like paying  Insurance premiums, utility bills, mobile recharge and carry out transactions with offline and online merchants like  Flipkart ,  Make My Trip , and  Y atra.  Srinivas has confirmed that other strategic tie-ups will be in place soon. The current cap of transferring money from one Airtel Money user to another is set to Rs.10,000 per calendar month, which depending on the adoption rate may increase further. Vodafone has a similar offering called  m-Paisa  which they collaboratively built with HDFC but there is no news about it now. Maybe they are readying it for a big and strategic launch. We have pointed out earlier how  M-Commerce  can be big in this country where most of the people access Internet only through their phones. This could be a huge step towards simplifying transactions across the country and will help in developing a positive mentality towards technology and mobile. Have you used Airtel Money yet?
